Architecture & Abstract

Human Bone Church, near Prague 2015. The Ossuary, or Bone Church, at Kutna Hora is about an hour’s drive from Prague, Czech Republic.  In the 13th century a local abbot returned from a visit to Palestine with some soil which he sprinkled on the cemetery at the Chapel of All Saints.  This association with the Holy Land made the chapel a sought-after location for burial, especially by the aristocracy of Central Europe.  In the 17th century during the Thirty Years’ War space ran out in the cemetery and older remains were exhumed and placed inside the chapel; estimates are that the remains of 40,000 people are there. Ironically the chapel is situated next to the International Tobacco Museum.
