The Wild West
Grizzly Bear #399 and cubs, Tetons, Wyoming 2018. The Secretary of Interior approved hunting grizzlies including mothers and cubs in their dens. A federal judge blocked the approval for now. Bear #399 is 25 years old, a grandmother and one of 800 grizzlies in the lower 48 states. Hunters have proclaimed they want to kill her as soon as they can get the ban lifted. Bear #399 has learned to navigate a delicate balance between the areas where humans are and the area where male grizzlies are; they will sometimes kill cubs.
Crescent City Bay 2018. On March 28, 1964, a 9.2 magnitude earthquake struck Alaska. About five hours later a tsunami struck Crescent City, California in the early morning hours. Three smaller waves struck the downtown doing some damage followed by a sense of calm; but later a 21-foot wave killed 11 people and destroyed 29 city blocks; 289 buildings were damaged. Today there’s a tsunami siren warning system. The shape of the city now is a result of the largest tsunami to strike the United States.
